U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, who did not get a speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention, made it near the stage tonight -- he watched Joe Biden accept the vice presidential nomination from premium seats near the stage, in a box that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean, and former Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle. After Barack Obama joined Biden on the stage, he made his way over and shook hands with the junior Senator from New Jersey.

The curse of William Warren Bradley

If you find yourself running for office in New Hampshire, and Bill Bradley calls and says he’s ready to endorse, maybe its best that you don’t take the call.  The Hall of Fame basketball player and three-term United States Senator from New Jersey has backed the wrong horse in the last three New Hampshire Democratic presidential primaries: Barack Obama in 2008, Howard Dean in 2004, and himself against Al Gore in 2000. His Excellency, Ambassador Beson?

Former Neptune Mayor Michael Beson was PoliticsNJ.com's Politician of the Year in 2003.  Beson had become presidential candidate Howard Dean's state campaign manager in mid-2002, when Dean was polling in the single-digits and PoliticsNJ.com's Brian Murphy became the only political reporter in the state willing to meet with him during a June '02 visit to New Jersey.  By the end of 2003, Dean was the front runner for the Democratic nomination, and most of the state Democratic establishment, including Governor James E. McGreevey, were backing Dean.

In Kean's backyard, Dean says Democrats must compete everywhere

DNC Chairman Howard Dean in Kenilworth this morningDNC Chairman Howard Dean in Kenilworth this morning

When Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean starts listing the names of American cities in rapid succession, it’s difficult for the observer not to brace for what surely will be a war whoop exclamation point.

An old joke for Dean, but inevitable in packed houses where he faces core supporters. And while the former pump-up-the-volume anti-war Presidential candidate did rattle off locales where he believes Democrats can compete with the implementation of his 50-state strategy, there was no jump off the oratorical high dive as he addressed Union County Democrats this morning at the Kenilworth Inn.

Under Corzine, freedom will ring for Dems in '08

For now, Governor Jon Corzine has quietly asked Democratic party leaders to refrain from public endorsements in the race for the 2008 presidential nomination. But Corzine, unlike predecessors James E. McGreevey in 2004 (Howard Dean) and Christine Todd Whitman in 1996 (Bob Dole) and 2000 (George W. Bush), is unlikely to pressure County Chairmen and legislators to follow his own choice -- if he makes one at all. New Jersey Democrats, according to sources close to Corzine, will be free to pick their own candidate.

New Jersey appears to be set for a February 5, 2008 primary. The Senate has already passed a bill moving the date up from February 26, and Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts has said he will post the bill in the lower house sometime soon. Corzine has pledged to sign the bill.
