Senate leadership position goes to the south

Stephen Sweeney chosen as majority leader after a hard fought, emotional battle with state Sen. Paul Sarlo.

Although the decision-making process was closed and the official decision was unanimous, sources say that Sweeney had the support of 14 of the 23 member caucus. Backing Sweeney were the expected south Jersey contingent -- Jeff Van Drew, Jim Whelan, Fred Madden, Dana Redd and John Adler. But he also had support from Senators from the rest of the state -- Brian Stack, Sandra Bolden Cunningham, Barbara Buono, Nicholas Scutari, Bob Smith, Ray Lesniak, Joe Vitale and Loretta Weinberg.

Hutchison wasn't motivated to run against Madden

Daniel Hutchison, a Gloucester Township Councilman and a Republican, said he didn’t run for state Senate this year in district 4 because he thinks State Sen. Fred Madden, a Democrat, is basically a good candidate.

"I respect him more than I respect any other State Senator," said Hutchison in a telephone interview Wednesday. "He is a genuinely decent human being, who stands up for what he believes. He voted for (Gov. Jon) Corzine’s budget. On that point he and I disagree, but we agree on a lot."

MADDEN-REDD RESOLUTION ADVANCES TO PROMOTE LYME DISEASE AWARENESS

TRENTON – The Senate today gave final approval to a resolution, AJR-64/SJR-32, sponsored in the Senate by Senators Fred Madden and Dana Redd, to designate May as “Lyme Disease Awareness Month” in New Jersey.

“Our goal is to encourage prompt detection of Lyme Disease infection so those afflicted get treated and avoid exposure later on to serious neurological disorders,” said Senator Madden, D-Gloucester and Camden.

Madden Bill to Require Health Insurers to Cover Ambulance Services is Now Law

MADDEN BILL TO REQUIRE HEALTH INSURERS TO COVER AMBULANCE SERVICES IS NOW LAW 

            TRENTON  A measure sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden which would require health insurance companies to directly pay ambulance costs in a timely manner, regardless of whether or not the ambulance company is under contract with the insurance company was signed into law today by Governor Jon  Corzine.

            “Often times, the medical care that patients receive on the way to the hospital can play a big part in how well they do once they are able to been seen by a doctor,” said  Senator Madden, D-Camden and Gloucester, who is a member of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.  “This legislation will help make sure that the main focus of ambulance service providers is in delivering the care that patients so desperately need.”

Democrats are spending money in four districts where they have a reasonable shot at picking up seats: against GOP incumbents Nicholas Asselta in district 1, Sonny McCullough in district 2, and Gerald Cardinale in the 39th; for open seats in District 8 (where Republican-turned-Democrat Assemblyman Francis Bodine faces Burlington County Clerk Philip Haines for the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Martha Bark.

Allen hasn't contributed to women running for Senate

"It still upsets me," Allen said. "Hundreds of years -- eight women."

But actually, Allen was the ninth woman to serve in the State Senate. She was preceeded by Mildred Barry Hughes (D-Union) in 1966, Jerry English (D-Union) in 1971, Wynona Lipman (D-Essex) in 1972, Anne Martindell (D-Mercer) and Alene Ammond (D-Camden) in 1974, Leanna Brown (R-Morris) and Catherine Costa (D-Burlington) in 1984, and Martha Bark (R-Burlington) in 1997. Allen and Shirley Turner (D-Mercer) took office in January 1998.

New GOP candidate vs. Madden

Gloucester Township Councilwoman Shelley Lovett will challenge freshman State Senator Frederick Madden in the 4th district.  Republicans picked Lovett to replace John Jankowski, who dropped his Senate bid last June.  Lovett had been seeking an Assembly seat; she'll be replaced on the ballot by Agnes Gardiner.

Madden's GOP opponent drops out

Democrat Fred Madden unseated an incumbent Republican State Senator four years ago by just 64 votes after the Camden County Democrats spend nearly $5 million on his campaign.

Now, Madden is unopposed in his bid for re-election to a second term. His Republican opponent, former Gloucester Township GOP Chairman John Jankowski, dropped out of the race on June 24, and so far, no new challenger her emerged.
