State Senator Thomas Kean

KEAN: LEGISLATURE SHOULD NOT OBSTRUCT U.S. ATTORNEY INVESTIGATION
Calls for Full Disclosure By Legislative Services Commission

Senator Thomas H. Kean (R-Essex/Morris/Union/Somerset) issued the following statement:Senator Thomas H. Kean (R-Essex/Morris/Union/Somerset) issued the following statement:

Media reports indicating that the Legislature is refusing to comply with a subpoena from the United States Attorney relating to an ongoing criminal grand jury investigation are disturbing. I am particularly troubled by reports that taxpayer monies are now being expended to retain an outside attorney for the purpose of resisting the request for documents in federal court.

The Legislative Services Commission must act immediately to ensure that the Legislature complies with the U.S. Attorney’s request in a manner that is both complete and swift. The legislative leaders should heed the advice of Governor Corzine, and support the efforts of the U.S. Attorney to end the culture of corruption in Trenton.

Any effort to frustrate this investigation will rightly be viewed with cynicism by the people of this State. The legislative leaders must put aside concerns over political damage control, and instead be guided by principles of honesty, transparency and a commitment to reforming a State Government that is sorely out of touch with the values of the people of New Jersey.
