Woodbury, NJ (September 25, 2008) - The head of Gloucester County's Sweeney-Corzine team has apparently resorted to John Kerry-like double talk saying he opposed Governor Corzine's sales tax increase but forgets he kept his mouth shut while Senate bill 440 went to the Budget and Appropriations Committee to die. The bill, as introduced by sponsors state Senators Pennacchio and Beck, would have decreased the state's sales tax to 6%.
Gloucester County Republican Freeholder candidate Phyllis Scapellato said, "Typical Stephen Sweeney double talk. Is he going to say ‘I was for it before I was against it' next? He had the chance as the Senate Majority Leader and a member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee to fight for the families of New Jersey and Gloucester County and sat silent The fact is Mr. Sweeney has failed the working families of Gloucester County."
"First he says no to a tax increase then when given the opportunity to right the wrong he sits silent," GOP Freeholder candidate Larry Wallace said. "Apparently Mr. Sweeney wants to have his cake and eat it too. He should be honest with the hard working families of Gloucester County and tell them he did nothing when he was given the opportunity to put the sales tax back to 6%."
"It's painfully obvious from where I sit that Stephen Sweeny in his role as the head of the Sweeney-Corzine Trenton tax team does not have the best interests of Gloucester County on his mind," Republican Freeholder candidate Dan Roberts said. "Bill S440's sponsors and co-sponsors are all Republicans, I am willing to bet if that bill had been introduced by Sweeneycrats it would have made it out of committee and our sales tax would be lower. All we have to say to Mr. Sweeney is that actions truly do speak louder than words."
