In a sign that Congressman Steven Rothman continues to gear up for a future U.S. Senate bid, he has hired veteran political consultants Julie Roginsky and Bill Maer to help him with political and media strategies, and Danielle Leigh -- who was until recently U.S. Senator Robert Menendez's chief fundraiser -- to step up his fundraising operation. Roginsky and Maer, whose firm is based in Rothman's congressional district, have been involved in key statewide and national campaigns over the last few cycles.
Apparently, the GOP vice presidential nominee -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- has come as a huge surprise to Democrats.

the young at heart Frank Lautenberg is running again. At least he's raising money as if he is...he quit once and regretted it...I doubt he'll do the same this time.
I don't see ANY congressman challenging him.

Perhaps Rothman is gearing up for the coming Democratic primary where Huttle, Wildes or Sarlo could take his flip-flopping record out.

Lautenberg by his own admission hated retirement. Unless his health begins to deteriorate, I do not see a "re-retirement" for him in '08. Judging by his curent approval numbers and even by his unexpected/last minute 11 point victory in '02, makes me inclined to think he will have little primary or general election opposition the next time around.

Question to my democratic friends - do you think Rothman has a chance at making it through a primary for a statewide seat? He has always seemed to me as being dull and in the shadow of Menendez/Andrews.....and less attractive than some of the D's in the state house.....Sarlo, Greenwald, Sweeney, etc.

Good to see Danielle found work. Julie and Bill are laughing all the way to the bank. Steve is a very longshot at best for the Lautenberg seat and I suspect the only way Frank leaves the Senate is feet first.

Lautenberg will run again and will win or lose to Bill Baroni dependent on whether McCain or a far-rightist is the GOP nominee.
