New York Times endorses Adler, Lance, Shulman

The New York Times today endorsed two Democrats and one Republican in New Jersey’s three hot congressional races.

The Times picked State Sen. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) over Republican Medford Mayor Chris Myers in the 3rd Congressional district, writing that he “is a thoughtful, moderate Democrat who has helped ban smoking and curb predatory lending.”

But the paper, a frequent target of Republicans, picked State Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington) over Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) in the 7th District, writing that both are “excellent candidates,” but that Lance’s “leadership qualities and his voice of moderation are needed now in Congress and in the Republican Party.”

In the 5th District, Democratic challenger Dennis Shulman has had a good week.  He won the times endorsement today over incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage), who the times noted backs a constitutional ban on abortion, including cases of incest and rape, and supported President Bush’s tax cuts.  The paper supported Shulman because he would “work to mitigate global warming. He would also take an interest in psychological counseling and educational opportunities for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.”

But a poll commissioned by the liberal blog Daily Kos (but done by the non-partisan Research 2000) shows him trailing Garrett by 7%, 47% to 40%.  A month old poll by the same company showed him trailing by twice that amount.  That comes after political analyst Larry Sabato changed the race’s ranking from “likely Republican” to “leans Republican.”

Endorsements for Adler rolling in...

Besides this NY Times endorsement -- and note that the NY Times and Philadelphia Inquirer endorsements are short, perhaps representative of their cutbacks in N.J. coverage -- Adler has won the endorsement of the influential Courier-Post (largest paper in South Jersey), The Press of Atlantic City (the second largest paper in South Jersey), The Philadelphia Inquirer, and now Myers' home county paper, The Burlington County Times. Myers has only received a single newspaper endorsement, which is from the GOP paper the Asbury Park Press. Adler has five times as many newspaper endorsements as Myers -- this helps in a race where voters are still making up their minds.

And, for the love of all that is good, may Shulman's NY Times endorsement help him to pull the much-needed upset/defeat of extremist Scott Garrett.

knee-jerk reaction

OK, call me paranoid, but ... when a paper like the NYT endorses a Republican because "his voice of moderation is needed in congress and in the Republican Party," I cannot help having the knee-jerk reaction of feeling that their only objective is to weaken the Republican party and try to make it more like the Democratic Party. Nothing against Moderate Republicans (well, some of them are OK, including Lance), but I know that the NYT always has an objective. Sorry, but my knee is jerking on this one...

Dennis Shulman's endorsement over Scott Garrett

I'm so happy to hear that the NY Times endorsed Dennis Shulman and that they cited global warming as one of their reasons. Garrett has been a disaster for the environment, having received a 0 rating with the Sierra Club, and an average rating of 15.8 from the League of Conservation Voters over the course of his office.

They also endorsed him because of his interest in psychological counseling and educational opportunities for Iraq and Afghanistan vets. As a long-time psychologist, I know Dr. Shulman's presence in the House will do well for America's veterans.

Excellent choices NYT

It's exactly what I would have done.  Anyone meeting Lance and Stender in person will quickly be impressed how Lance's leadership qualities overshadow hers.  He's fiesty, bright and articulate.  She lacks might in presence--not just because she's about 5'0".

Although I'm hesitant to support Adler, his intellectual capacity, knowledge of law subtleties and genuine experience are preferrable to a unimpressive miltary industrialist.  I've been waiting for Myers to show uniqueness, creativity, or freshness.  But none came.
