Jon Corzine: Just What is HE Afraid of People Finding Out?"You have to drag every piece of information about this guy's business out of him." -- Tom Shea, Star Leger, 10/19/2005
Trenton, NJ - Republican State Committee Chairman Tom Wilson released the following statement today:
"Jon Corzine has created shell company after shell company to hide his businesses from public scrutiny. What little we do know has revealed serious and significant conflicts of interest. He is partners with the owner of a casino. He voted to give himself and a few of his millionaire friends who owned a Japanese bank a sweetheart tax break. He's involved with the takeover of a cable company that does business in New Jersey. He owns part of company that wants to turn the Jersey shore into oil fields. His blind trust is controlled by one of his best friends and isn't anything close to blind. With a track record like this, it's no wonder that Jon Corzine doesn't want people to know about his business.
But it's not just his business, he's made conflicts part of his political life too. He admits providing union boss Carla Katz with substantial gifts and financial support, but refuses to detail them. What is Mr. Corzine afraid New Jerseyans will find out? Did he pay her taxes? Has he created trust funds for her family? Did he buy her jewelry that costs as much as a small yacht? Corzine say's voters don’t deserve to know just how conflicted he is when it comes to Carla Katz.
As Jon Corzine’s campaign has gone from coronation to desperation, it is clear that Corzine remains afraid to withstand the kind of public scrutiny that New Jerseyans deserve. Doug Forrester has detailed all of his business interests, but Jon Corzine won't. Why won't he? What do they have to hide? It makes you wonder what he's so afraid of people finding out? His failure to disclose this most basic information begs the question: What else have Corzine and his campaign told us about him that isn't true?
Mr. Corzine promised the people of New Jersey that he'd provide real transparency. The only thing transparent is his attempt to shield the public from really knowing the true nature and extent of his conflicts. Jon Corzine's greatest conflict is with the truth."
