They couldn’t beat the GOP machine outright, so they’ve decided to toss a wrench into the Burlington County freeholders’ race.
Republican elected officials Jon Shevelew and Debbie Sarcone announced today that they intend to back the Democratic team of Chris Brown and Mary Anne Reinhart.
Shevelew, the Republican Mayor of Shamong, and Sarcone, the only Republican elected official in Evesham, ran off the line together as freeholder candidates in the Republican primary.
At the time, Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton called them "bugs on the windshield" in the face of GOP Freeholder Director Aubrey Fenton and his running mate, Freeholder Stacy Jordan.
"Mary Anne and I have served together for many years in Shamong and although I often disagree with her positions on the issues I never question her integrity or commitment to improving the lives of the residents she serves," Shevelew said in a statement. "Mary Anne is a unique candidate and someone Burlington County voters regardless of party ideology should support this November. She would be a tremendous Freeholder."
Added Sarcone of Brown, "While Chris and I have certainly not always seen eye to eye when it comes to different issues, there is never any doubt in my mind that he puts the interests of Evesham residents first. That is the kind of person we need on the Freeholder Board and would be a stark contrast to his opponents."
Layton issued a statement in response to his party rivals' decision to back the Democrats.
"They are a pair of politically disgruntled sore losers who have now taken their free spending, tax increasing philosophy to where it rightly belongs --- the Democrat party," said the GOP chairman.
"In fact, I will send change of party affiliation cards to both of them so they can cement their credentials as big spending liberal Democrats," he added. "I'll send the forms to the county Democrat headquarters so Shevelew and Sarcone can pick them up when they arrive for work."

Oh really?
"The actions of Jon Shevelew and Debbie Sarcone in endorsing the Democrat candidates for Burlington County Freeholder are neither surprising nor newsworthy."
-- BCRO operative Jeff Bell, in a hastily-issued news release following the news of the endorsements
Not newsworthy? Then why issue a news release about it? Is your news release about their non-news newsworthy, or should we also deem that non-newsworthy?
Seems to me that when news is labeled non-news, that's a pretty good sign it's gotten under someone's skin. Which seems to be the only required standard for news these days.
"Republicans endorse Democrats" is both surprising and newsworthy, because it doesn't happen every day, and because it requires placing public good above personal self-interest.
Very True
I'm suprised they are letting Jeff Bell write press releases....although after that release he may no longer be allowed to do that either.
Shevelew and Sarcone are to be respected for putting the taxpayers best interests ahead of the interests of party bosses. Good for them. Hopefully more people will step up and put the taxpayers first.
the problem with termites
by the time you call in an exterminator, your house has already been infested. Sounds like Norcross can open two more campaign accounts for candidates formerly known as republicans.
Bugs on the Windshield
Might be bugs on the windshield and you might beat the Dems this time, but eventually there are going to be enough bugs on the windshield to crash your machine.
Every time you open your mouth to denigrate people instead of returning a phone call to a young republican who wants to get involved you waste your opportunity and shorten your lifespan. You and the Colonel are the height of arrogance.
Shevelew has held the tax line in Shamong until this year when the gypsy moths and state police issues put an end to a great run. We can forgive that. Your making the party leadership so small and inaccessible is what is unforgivable.
What have you and the R's given us different than Corzine and the boys. If it is between corrupt losers and corrupt winners I guess us bugs will all just side with the corrupt winners until a real choice emerges.
Since you are having fun sending voter registration cards around...
As much as I like Chris Myers and Aubrey Fenton, tell them you sent my vote to the Democrats.
Watch your stronghold erode a little more this November. It might not be the year this year but the tide is turning thanks to your abusive, self serving leadership style. That is sad for the Republican party which I have loved and served my whole life but with you in charge they had to see it coming.
Bias PolitickerNJ
Where was the PolitickerNJ story when there was a contested primary in Burl Co?
Where is the coverage of the Chris Baxter/Board of Social Services scandal?
Makes you wonder!

Could Bill Layton make statements more classless than the ones in his press release today?
Personally
Let me here let you good folks know the real reason behind this whole non-issue. I received a letter before the primary detailing exactly what the search committee did and how they did it. After making a few calls to verify some accuracy, it was all true. Apparently the search committee needed to replace Donnelley met to pick the best person to replace him. I had my own opinions as to whom I personally would like, but hey, thats life. Debbie went before them as did Stacy Jordan and whomever else was on the list. Apparently the committee didnt feel she was the right person and were less than thrilled with her ability to demonstrate leadership based on party not personal loyalty. When she did not get her way after being told it was not her time, instead of being an adult and acting in the best interest of the party, she along with some other folk got together for revenge. Simply put. It was not about taking a stand, it was more about not getting her way. Most pols on both sides get rejected at one time or another but that is life. The numbers from the primary said it all. She and her mate got around 3800 to the County line of close to 8400. I further found out by looking at the numbers by town online, neither of the three won their own towns. To me that says volumes when you run for an office and cannot carry your home. Bottom line, it is no surprise that there is still anger over the loss, but most people are not surprised by their actions. But, regardless of what they say and who they are, most GOP will not back democrats. Look at Bodine. The democrats swore GOP would back him and he got clobbered.
To Easth8th
I do believe that politickernj does report on both sides of the issue. I remember there were some tags during the primary on this race but I think there were bigger fish like the contest between Andrews and Lautenberg, Myers and Kelly and a few others.
The Endorsed Republicans?
Billy Boy- Enough with the "Endorsed Republicans." Endorsed by whom? 300 County committee members, most of which have county jobs, appointments or contracts?
You and your "machine" took out hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans to defeat the so called "bugs" and what did it get you? It got Aubrey Fenton exactly 13 PERCENT of Republican voters to come out and vote for him. It got Stacey Jordan 12 PERCENT of Republican voters to come vote for her.
You and your "machine" spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and get 13 percent of REPUBLICANS to vote for your hand picked candidates. That is a joke!
Your constant insistence that you are the chairman of a united and strong party is comical in the face of the facts. You drew 13 percent of Registered Republicans to vote for your candidate. 87 percent of REGISTERED REPUBLICANS did not vote for your candidates or did not even bother to vote even though you spent hundreds of thousands in loans to "squash the bugs"...
And please be factual... when you talk about the "real republicans" or the "endorsed republicans" you are talking about individuals loyal to you, endorsed by individuals loyal to you.
Of the 300 or so county committee members, how many do not have jobs with the county, appointments from the county, contracts with the county or otherwise not indebted to you for their livelihood?
Your press releases are not good for much other than helping you tidy up after pushing out yet another meal from Old Country buffet.
Layton is the problem
Bill Layton acts as if the Burlington GOP is his own personal money machine.
He does not care about the regular republicans out there.
He has his own personal agendas, and until he is removed Republicans will continue to leave the party and elections will be lost. But as long and Bill and his buddy Glenn get their contracts thats all that really matters to them.
As for the county committee, hardly any of them are actively involved in the party. Most don't even know whats going on. The only one's involved are the ones with jobs/contracts on the line. Its really a sad sight, and things won't change til there is real reform in the party.
I disagree
Respectfully.
Most GOP in Burlco know of the problems been had between two camps and one right now is calling the shots and the other is still trying to disrupt in the hopes of destroying the party.
I do not agree with Layton on many levels, but at the same time I do and will support my party. Now, about your stats, the turnout was low for a primary but bottom bottom bottom line, the renegades lost by a large margin. I know many of those GOP who did back them, and they are not under no circumstances going to back democrats.
Are you sure that those folk who back Fenton and whorship at his church are going to back the democrats because this renegade group says so? I think you totally underestimate the voters of this County.
Oh, when will the democrats parade out Mr Tyler? You know, the so called patriotic candidate who with his daddy in Fieldsboro ripped down all those yellow ribbons around town on public and personal property in support of the troops because he and daddy are opposed to the war?
Now, that is newsworthy!
Oh
Burlcorep, your statement about County Committee I think was a bit far fetched. I am on County Committee and the last meeting after the primary, there were well over 350 county committee folk there from all over the county.
Where did you get your facts that county committees do not know what is going on?
Most of those people
That go to the county committee meetings don't know whats going on. They show up for the free refreshments. They couldn't tell anything about the candidates or their positions on any issues. They play no part in the decisions.
At the last meeting, Chris Baxter (the same Baxter involved w/ the Board of Social Services Scandal) got up and told the people who the candidates would be. The committee was never offered any other choices. Why let 5 people in a back room decide, why not let all the candidates go before the committee and then hold a vote??
I know the answer to my own question: Because then Layton might not get his puppet, which could jeopardize all those contracts he needs to award to big donors.
Speaking for yourself
Are you speaking for yourself burlcorep when you state "Most of those that go to the county committee meetings don't know whats going on"? I am sure those who attend who actually know why they are there would differ in your characterization of committee members and meetings. So Admiral Stockdalelite, the next time you are at a meeting, please stand up and identify yourself by stating,"why am I here?" Then feel free to resign your position so someone who actually knows what is going on can assist our party in moving it forward and not backwards which you seem to enjoy. For you are not trong enough to stand up and try to change things but would rather take shots from the balcony.
Burlcorep
You are a disgrace, the vast majority of Committtee people take their job seriously and do not attend meetings just for refreshments. This is all about bruised egos and the lady from Evesham has the biggest ego I have ever seen. Look at me I'm so pretty! What do you mean I am not going to be a Freeholder, I'm prettier than everyone else.
This why the renegade Republicans are so pathetic!
This is stupid
I'm not from Burlington County, but as an outside observer, I believe the County GOP should get rid of these traitors.
You are either a Democrat or a Republican, but you can't be both. If these so called Republicans want to endorse Democrats - then they should join the Democratic Party.
If they don't see eye to eye with either slate - then they should sit this election out.
The Burlco GOP is one of the best run GOP organizations in the State, they don't need these pathetic losers.
OMG!
I feel pretty, Oh so pretty, its alarming how pretty I feel -- sorry the rest of the words of that song escapes me, but OC and Hogan, you guys rock! It now really makes sense about all these attacks coming out against the county. A few of those "renegade" supporters were pointed out to me at the last County Committee meeting and they did not look too happy after the primary beating. Most in attendance cheered and clapped for the GOP slate elected by the voters and I feel sorry that those who lost can only try to further cause problems. It is a shame because Nero said it right, you cannot be both. The difference between Bodine and Sarcone is that at least Bodine didnt vow revenge when he lost last year.
Oh and yes, I take my position, my elected position as a county committee member serioulsy because I am proud of my party and I am proud to help ensure the right people, the best people are on our ballot.
How much did it cost her to be so pretty?
I heard her plastic surgeon retired early.
I wonder how much it costs to get rid of so many hard miles?
Why are you guys and gals debating this?
These two psuedo-Republcan elected officals have never acted like Republicans...So why would you expect them to now?
I agree
Burlcorep is right, I attend these meetings. Most people don't know whats going on.
The county committee actually has never had a vote to decide between more than 1 candidate in as long as I can remember. Everything has been done behind the scenes for atleast the past 12 years I have been involved. I just started another term on committee and the meetings are definitely not engaging for members.
Issues
You guys can make personal attacks on good republicans and are avoiding the real issue, CORRUPTION. County Committee is a joke. Half the people at the meeting are not even on county committee. The GOP has had scandal after scandal and the voters (not the pathetic primary turnout kind) are now paying attention.
Really??
First of all repforlife, you are making stuff up. At least have the guts to admit that you are wrong. If you honestly think that Committee members do not know what is going on, then I think you need to resign your seat and let someone who really wants to represent the GOP take it.
Most of the people at those meetings know what is going on and are aware of what needs to be done. Your painting of a scene of mindless folk only make you look as sour as the renegades. Yes, some of the renegade fans were there and I am sure they were none to happy because the GOP voters denied their candidates.
However, you and I both know that those meetings always end up on a positive note and if you are so angry and bitter about being a part of the process, leave because I am sure no one needs another renegade like yourself.
Oh and bringing names to the members, obviously you do not know anything about the process. If you are so angry because your little picks dont make the cut THEN THE NEXT TIME ANYONE ASKS FOR ANY OTHER NAMES TO BE BROUGHT FORTH BEFORE THE NOMINATION PROCESS IS CLOSED AT THE VOTE, THEN OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND GIVE A NAME!
Stop complaining and making excuses. Last I heard it is all open for nomination!
Real Republicans?
Really East? Like Sarcone who flips because she didnt get her way? Like Bodine?
Nice spin, but fact of the matter is that GOP voters sans those renegades will back the GOP candidates.
It is really a shame that now the renegade group have now started to attack county committee members. How desperate is that?
Numbers Don't lie
87 percent of REGISTERED REPUBLICANS did NOT vote for Aubrey Fenton in the primary even though the GOP took out over $300,000 in loans to "squash the bugs"...
Furthermore, can anyone provide the answers to the following questions:
1. How many active county committee members are there?
2. How many of the county committee members are county employees?
3. How many of the county committee members are appointed to county or municipal boards?
4. How many of the county committee members are elected officials?
5. How many of the county committee members receive county contracts?
Add the above numbers up and how many true Republicans comprise the county committee?
Now, ask them how many candidate screening processes they have been privvy to.
Anyone want to venture a guess?
The point is that when your evidence of a unified party is based on folks who are indebted to you for their jobs or the whopping 13 percent of your OWN party who supported you in the primary, it doesn't really say much now does it?
The numbers don't lie.
pablos3 "open nomination"
Are you kidding? Everyone knew Jordan was getting the nod before the screening process even started. Everyone knows you are annointed in Burl Co not nominated.
You Sound
Very bitter east. Were you not annointed for a position???
Layton truth squad, your personal tirade was very amusing and full of hate towards anyone GOP that doesent agree with you, but let me answer a few of your hystrionics.
First of all, in my town we have a lot of dists and not one CC member works for the county or has. These are honest hard working men and women who are GOP and want to a positive job. You have no proof that every CC member is bought and paid for and that shows your own malice and discontent.
What I find amusing is that you renegade folk actually thought that your little band would actually force the voters hands.
The very fact that Sarcone is crying to the paper only further proves that we made the right decision to reject her, her team, and her group. At the end of the day, it is a non issue because its over; she is not running and she should really change her party affilliaiton with the others because we dont need them.
Layton Truth
I have been involved w/ the GOP for the last 12 years or so. I will try to answer your questions as honestly as possible.
1. I would say at any given meeting there are no more than 100-150 or so active county committee members there.
2. I have no idea how many are county employees, but I would say probably 2/3 of the people are either employees or family/friends of employees. Most of the town chairs are county employees or have county contracts.
3. I would say the 2/3 is true for all things, jobs/appointments/contracts, ect. About 1/3 are probably truly interested Republicans.
So in all honesty, we probably have 30-40 people who have no contracts/appointments, but a lot of them are seniors who may have in the past.
And I will tell you in the 12 years I have been there, we have had exactly 0 true screenings. Its always the candidates being presented for ratification. There is never discussion or real nominations.
Talk about Using the party for personal gain
I was looking at the most recent ELEC report out of the Burlington GOP and it is quite interesting.
I am trying to figure out why Charles Lambiase pays himself and his wife salaries with money donated to the party? Is it normal for the treasurer and his wife to get salaries from the party they serve?
What did Glenn Paulsen do to earn $10,000 in legal fees that was paid to him on June 30? Seems like a lot of money for legal fees?
And of course all the normal hacks signed for the $250,000 loan: Bark, Layton Paulsen, Baxter, Bristow, Strobel....I guess they all needed to protect their positions so to speak.
Their ELEC reports are always an interesting read....more to come.
Well
I am sure there is really good stuff on Sarcone and Shevelow as well. I had heard and read about her tax hikings then denying she every did them, and I am sure if we really look into the annals of those renegade folk, I am sure that you too will find a few problems here and there as well.
Let he who is without sin cast that first stone you know.
Bottom line, voters of Burlco are going to back the County slate. If that renegade team really any potential, they would have won. But people rejected them so time to move on.
When will they ever learn
The Democrats took another page out of their failed campaign strategy guide. This is nothing more than Deja Vu for the Burlington Democrats.
They tried a similar manuver last year with Republican turned Democrat Fran Bodine and had less than stellar results.
Now they are putting their eggs in the basket of two disgruntled Republicans? If I were the Democrats I wouldn't trust these two loser at all. How do trust anyone who endorses candidates - not because they have had a change in ideology, but because they didn't get their way.
The Democrats deserve these two - it will be fun watching them get burned again.
Tidbit
In speaking with someone this am, (just bumped into this person as I was getting my coffee) we were speaking about the state of politics in Burlco, and this person said that they were one of the people on the QT that begged Sarcone not to run. Apparently she was told by several people to wait her turn, let the process play out and then there would be her time to advance. Apparently Debbie had her mind set It was clear that her own agenda was set and that she would not heed any advice, suggestion or guidance to ensure her own credibility in the future. It was also mentioned that she still cannot comprehend her loss, that somehow the voters are stupid, ignorant etc and she has her own axe to grind now. What is truly sad is if she just waited one or two more years there would have been a good chance she would have been tagged to run for a higher office seeing that she is already a sitting councilwoman in a large muni. Too bad more egos bite the dust.
Wait for the bosses to annoint?
I like how you avoid THE ISSUES like corruption and all you can talk about is the primary. For a "non-story" you hacks sure are posting a lot about this one. You must have a thing for Sarcone cause you can't go a post without mentioning her. Last time I checked there is a reason for primaries ITS CALLED DEMOCRACY. You speak of our democratic process like its "when the boss says its your turn" and that shows that your just another pig at the county trough. We already have one huge hog in Layton and its ashame that there are others like you. OINK OINK Pablo!
Thank YOu
I expect nothing more than that from you East because you are as void as your posts.
What bothers you more? that the GOP voters are smart enough to reject renegades and people like you who whine and cry when they dont get your way, or does it bother you more that the dems are equally as corrupt?
Either way, County 1, renegades 0
And
The next time East you pout about people not having the right to nominate others in a free and open CC meeting, open your mouth and say a name if you dont like who is being nominated.
You're a fool
Everyone at the cc meetings know its a done deal weeks before the selection process and the cc meeting. I will say a name EDDIE WATERS for chairman. Thats my guess who you are you hack.
I can't wait for the picnic on saturday to see all the little piggies at the trough. I will be sititng with the 10% of the cc that care about good government and serving the people not ourselves. When I see you I will make sure to give you a big ol OINK OINK.
Boo Hoo
Make sure you pack some depends, it sounds as if you cannot leave without them
Deal in Facts
Way too much immaturity going back and forth. Anyone who realistically thought that Sarcone and Shevelew could win off the line with no money is delusional. Coupled with a 3rd slate running as the conservatives in a GOP primary there was just no chance. No one can dispute the results.
The concern I'd have if I was a county employee or someone indebted to Layton is that the County GOP took out 300K in loans and turned out 13% of Registered Republicans to support their hand picked candidates.
87 percent of Registered Republicans do not like, care about or even know the endorsed incumbents. Even after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in the primary and despite having a hotly contested Congressional primary on the ballot.
Look, the fact of the matter is that Layton and his team just aren't very good. Layton managed ONE race back in 1995 in a GOP district. Anyone could have won. And worked at arguably one of the worst, most dysfunctional organizations called the NJGOP. He just isn't very good politically, is not smart, is lazy and there's only so much Paulsen and the Traz Group can do for him.
Jeff Bell has never done anything.
Their other members are Ed Waters (famous for blowing 50 point leads and losing control of Evesham), Rich Levesque (first E.D. to ever lose a county race and assisted Waters in the Evesham loss) and Rick England (longtime Paulsen ally from the Senate Republicans and now 8th LD).
Their most popular elected officials: Jim Saxton (retired); Diane Allen (hates Paulsen and Layton); Bill Haines (see Diane Allen) and Jim Wujcik (see Diane Allen and Bill Haines) are not involved with the campaigns anymore, nor are the three main field and GOTV team of Dawn Lacy, Jason Carty and Rob O'Connor.
Sure, the GOP Machine will keep the pressure on their 18-20 insiders to keep loaning money. But they're already in debt 600K, they have no state committee to help them, no surrounding counties to help them, and numerous scandals looming over them.
Any company that spends as much money as they did and gets such a weak return on their investment (13% support from Republicans) would be out of business.
They managed to hold off Sarcone and Shevelew because they had all the money, the line and a 3rd slate, but they won't hold off the Democrats in November.
By the way, Pablos or one of the other Layton loyalists... still awaiting those figures on the composition of the County Committee? If you are going to base your point about a united party on the support of these folks, then let's understand who they are?
HOW MANY ARE COUNTY EMPLOYEES?
HOW MANY HAVE CONTRACTS WITH THE COUNTY?
HOW MANY HAVE APPOINTMENTS TO COUNTY OR LOCAL BOARDS?
HOW MANY ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS?
You Know
You know your own answers. Bottom line, it dosent matter because most rank and file GOP will not vote Democrat and will support the slate.
What bothers you more? The fact that your group ran non electable people during a primary knowing you were going to lose, or are you bothered more that the people of Burlco saw thru the whole thing?
Hey
Hey - I am not a committee person. So if any of you sore losers want to resign and let me become one, I am more than happy to take over for you. I am not a back bencher who pisses and moans when I don't get my way.
