NEWARK - On the day Newark Councilwoman Dana Rone lost her council seat in the courtroom of assignment Judge Patricia Costello, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, the City Council and Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Essex) all supported her in her effort to appeal the judge’s decision.
But they also prepared for the very real possibility that Rone may lose her second-to-last chance gamble in the appellate division, and then fall with her last shot in the state Supreme Court.
Former Central Ward Councilman Charles Bell appears to be the candidate most likely to generate support from among the city's anti-Booker factions. Charone Montayne, daughter of Freeholder Blonnie Watson, may also make a run, but as a registered Republican she must be considered a longshot.
On the mayor’s side, the long-groomed Nakia White emerged as a late in the day option to replace an unsalvageable Rone.
North Ward Democratic leader Steve Adubato offered "no comment" regarding his intentions in the Central Ward.
For his part, Sen. Rice questioned Costello’s decision to uphold the law banning Rone from office, and suggested that it seems "kind of one-sided." He wants to look into it, he said.
The senator underscored that he supports Rone while she pursues her appeal.
If she fails in that process, however, he says he would back Bell, who also has the early support of former Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins.
"If Bell is a candidate, I’ll be 100% behind him," said Rice.
Bell was among those Sharpe James era council people swept out of office by Team Booker in 2006.
A dangerous proposition for the Booker administration, Bell returning to the council could be a foot-in-the-door to what the mayor's political enemies would hope to be a stampede by the old guard back to the halls of power in 2010.
Bell did not return calls for comment Tuesday.

Bell hasn't made up his mind yet
he has been enjoying his retirement, golfing and the like, is not looking to get back inthe fray with the old fray-yet. Chaneyfield jenkins is said to be leaning on his heavily to run. She considers Bell the beginning of her vindication. She's lost twice of late-having supported Hillary Clinton against Obama and supporting a losing school superintendent candidate.
What Makes You So Sure?
Mom In Law, Chaneyfield Jenkins has no reason for vindication. In fact, being off the council has given her time to reflect and be separated from the mess that the Booker Administration and Council have created.
One thing I know of just by watching her over the year, if she was still on that council, they would not have been able to get away with a fraction of the things they have.
And as far as I know, Chaneyfield has never supported a school superintendent candidate. She was a supporter and friend of Marion Bolden, just as she was a supporter and friend of Charlie Bell & Hillary Clinton (Clinton was at her home for a Fundraiser twice- so was Corzine, Menendez, Torrecelli, Andrews, and the list goes on. Didn't you make it to the grand event??).
Loyalty... get it???
Don't worry be happy!
Happy living9, don't worry be happy!
I've seen and heard Mrs. Chaneyfield Jenkins over the last year and she's still spitting blood! And what is this Council getting away with? Please-there's more scrutiny now for public officials that there ever was during the James era. This Council may be a a bunch of idiots but I don't think they are taking off the top like the previous Council. And, what exactly has Mrs. C-J done to earn your trust? I can tell you I may live in the South Ward of Newark but
news travelled there too and unless you were a crony of her husband you didn't even get an audience with Ms. C-J. I never saw someone so taken with themselves than that couple! They even used to call themselves the Newark elite bautiful people! Ha ha
If Charlie Bell was smart he would run like the wind from her endorsement and REALLY transform himself.
