A campaign consultant for Rep. E. Scott Garrett (R-05) called out Democratic challenger Dennis Shulman for hypocrisy today regarding the influence of lobbyists in his campaign.
A week after Shulman’s campaign criticized Garrett for hiring a new chief of staff who used to lobby for mortgage giant Countrywide Financial, Garrett consultant Matt Leonardo sent out a blistering email pointing out that Shulman Campaign Manager Jeff Hauser was a lobbyist for the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CCIR) last year.
“It appears Dennis Shulman and Jeff Hauser have egg on their faces,” said Leonardo.
Hauser worked for Shulman during a time period covered by lobbying reports that showed him in the employ of CCIR, during which time Hauser received one reimbursement check form the campaign. No termination paperwork was ever filed by Hauser.
During his time with the group, Hauser lobbied House members on for four pieces of legislation: The American Dream Act; The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act; The Agricultural Jobs, Opportunity, Benefits and Security Act of 2007; and the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act.
Hauser said that, even if he hadn’t filed the termination paperwork, he had not been paid by CCIR since he started working for Shulman’s campaign. He did volunteer for Shulman during his personal time in October, while he was still with the organization, he said.
“I’m employed exclusively by the Shulman for Congress campaign, and have been since November, 2007.”
Shulman, for his part, responded that the problem isn’t having a former lobbyist on staff – that there’s a difference between hiring someone who worked for a troubled mortgage broker and someone who worked for a non-profit immigrant advocacy group. Hauser’s former employer, he noted, is funded by groups like the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the United Methodist Church.
"Garrett puts a high paid lobbyist for the most disgraced special interest in the country in charge of his office, paid for by your taxes and mine, and then he has the gall to attack my campaign manager for working with groups such as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the United Methodist Church?” he said. “Countrywide Financial is at the center of the housing-mortgage crisis which has helped throw our economy into recession – a crisis that Garrett until recently termed fear mongering. Garrett sits on the Housing subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, and yet he is entirely in the pocket of the industry he is supposed to regulate in the public interest."
Leonardo, who said that Hauser’s position on immigration issues echo the group’s, responded that Shulman’s response was pure “spin.”
"Shulman is going to have to hypnotize every voter in the 5th district to get them to buy that spin,” said Leonardo. “The bottom line is he made a baseless accusation against Scott Garrett that had zero merit. And if Shulman thinks having a pro-amnesty lobbyist running his campaign is a positive in the 5th district, he may want to get checked out himself."

That's the best you can do?
The problem is not that people are paid to talk to legislators and advocate for certain issues, but that people are paid to spin legislators and get support for bills that help certain industries.
Hauser was advocating for legislation that he thought was best for the country, whileGarrett's lobbyist was advocating for legislation that would put money in his employers' pockets.
There's a huge difference between a Pro-life lobyist and a Countrywide lobbyist, a pro-immigrant lobbyist and oil company lobbyist, between a faith-based lobbyist and a chemical industry lobbyist.
And if the Garrett campaign doesn't know that they should get out of DC. If they do know it then they are liars.
Clearly that's Shulman's view too.
Clearly the Democrat is a strong supporter of giving illegal aliens the same rights and government handouts available to American citizens.
Coupled with a radical extreme pro-abortion view supporting the "procedure" up to the day of delivery and his support for gun control, higher taxes and more government programs, one has to wonder if there are any issues where the Democrat isn't 180 degrees out of sync with the district.
Congratulations
I hope that Rob demonstrates his great fiscal management stills to Tom Wilson.
Now that Bergen is rolling in cash this should be no problem.
Lobbyists are a symptom of a larger problem
I disagree with Formerly Anonymous' distinction.
The point is that the revolving door is a problem. Lobbyists exist because the federal government is growing so large that it is impacting every facet of our society. Therefore, every interest group, industry or business hires a lobbyist for a handout, favorable regulation, a tax loophole, or some other benefit.
The solution is to cut the federal government bureaucracy so that it has less power - and therefore - less ability to dole out special favors.
We will never get rid of institutional corruption if the federal government continues to control trillions of dollars.
Good God
Lobbyists have extisted since the beginning of the Republic. Thomas Jefferson was one fo the first lobbyists to gain an earmark for someone. So please spare me the high and mighty speech about the evils of lobbyists. You obviously do not know your history. Or are you suggesting that Thomas Jefferson was corrupt? And lastly, for Shulman to attack someone while having a lobbyist on his payroll is called HYPOCRISY. Please someone look up the word. To say that Garrett's chief of staff was not looking out for the thousands of employees, many who work in NJ and the 5th District is either someone who is clueless about the realities of how a business works or is a liar. Which one is it guys and gals?
Maleficent Corruption Thy Name is Garrett
This is pathetic.
Scott Garrett is in bed with a lobbyist for a corrupt dirty evil thieving mortgage company that contributed to the destrution of our economy. He actually hires this bum as his CHIEF OF STAFF!!!
Garred SHOULD be ashamed; but he is shameless.
If Garrett is really so proud of his chief of staff then he should be willing to DEFEND the dirty lousy dishonest practices of the company and the industry that have resulted in the real estate crash and the economic destruction that is ongoing because of it.
Come out, come out Scottie Garrett, wherever you are.
Do you have the courage and integrity to debate Dennis Shulman on all these issues and questions?
Or is the best you can do is to issue patheticly desperate press releases designed to distract attention from the fact that your a cowardly weasel who won't dare to go toe to toe with your opponent.
