Among the candidates defeated in Tuesday's primary elections, the one with the greatest potentialis Nicholas Chiaravallotti, who lost his bid for the Democratic Assembly nomination in the 31st district. Chiaravallotti, who left his job as State Director for U.S. Senator Robert Menendez to make the race, ran on a ticket with Louis Manzo against the Hudson County Democratic Organization. But HCDO leaders offered huge compliments to Chiaravallotti for the way he conducted himself over the last eight weeks, and recognized that the huge plurality his ticket received in Bayonne was largely a result of Chiaravallotti's efforts.

Chiarav... for Mayor?
But with Chiappone heading back to Trenton, I'm not sure there's room in the 31st for 2 Bayonne candidates. Perhaps he is now a front-runner to take over as Mayor when Doria is finished.
Nicholas was one of the class acts of the primary season
The guy's going places, deservedly so. He inspires the progressive grassroots who want reform, while knowing how not to poke the eyes of party leaders. It's a very hard balance, but Nicholas does it. He could be the future of an HCDO that brings factions together. He ran an exciting campaign and a clean campaign, and a field operation in Bayonne second to very few in municipalities across the state. A talented guy, a great guy.
LIttle hope with Chiappone around
Chiaravallotti is a Doria and Menendez protege who was fortunate to be lined up against Harvey Smith, a black candidate in a predominantly white town. Manzo spent a fortune in Bayonne and didn't get the "huge" plurality he wanted. Against Chiappone in a municipal election where Chiappone rules with independent voters, Chiaravallotti has little chance. Comments that he ran a "clean" campaign are not true. He knows enough about politics to be dirty without appearing to be dirty.
No Where to Go
Chiaravallotti will go back to working behind the scenes as he's done in the past. He rode Manzo's coatails in Bayonne and posted good numbers against an African American candidate. The other person, Newton-Moses is finished as well. As for Manzo, his eyes are set squarely on the Mayor's race. He has no other options. No other race to run in.
