Lawyer seeks GOP support to challenge Sweeney

Sweeney, 47, was elected to the Senate in 2001, narrowly ousting 28-year incumbent Raymond Zane. A labor leader and Gloucester County Freeholder Director, he has emerged as one of the most powerful political figures in Southwestern New Jersey. Republicans have been trying to recruit Susan Bestwick, a former Salem County Freeholder, to run against Sweeney.
The district includes parts of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties.
