For those of you who don’t know, my daughter Kate is running for the open seat for Congress in the 7th District. I couldn’t be more proud of her, and of course I will vote for her. Unfortunately, some have been quick to judge her both positively and negatively on the single fact that she is my daughter. That’s why I want to share with you why Kate is more than just my daughter, and why she will make an excellent member of Congress.
Recently bloggers have noted that Kate has “distanced” herself from me by saying she is more conservative than me. In a campaign you have to define for voters who you are and where you stand on the issues. Kate is more conservative than me, so why shouldn't she come right out and say it? She has always been an independent thinker and I have always respected that.
On the other hand, if she never talked about me, she would be attacked for that as well. Kate, I congratulate you for answering up front the question many voters are asking in their own minds: how do you compare to your mother on the issues?
The bottom line is that this race isn’t about me, or my record when I was Governor - it is about Kate and all that she has to offer. From a very young age, Kate was interested in public service and digging deep into issues that face this country. It’s why, after graduating from college, she went to work in Washington DC, putting her determination and smarts to good use.
Most people don’t know that Kate worked for the U.S. Department of Labor specializing in the Employment and Training Agency after September 11th, 2001, helping displaced workers in New York City get back on their feet. She also worked for Chris Cox, Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Homeland Security Committee and House Policy Committee, and she understands firsthand how the legislative process should work in Washington.
But more than that, Kate is one of the most caring, hard-working, dedicated people I have met. She has been running her own successful small business for the past 3 1/2 years here in Somerset County.
As she has said herself, Kate is running for Congress because she knows Washington is going to require new blood and new energy if things are going to change. I know Kate and she isn’t going to sit around and hope that someone else will fight the good fight - she will be that fighter.
She will work hard in this campaign going door-to-door to earn your vote, and she will shake things up in D.C. when she gets there. Her youth is her strength. She knows the process and her way around DC. She knows New Jersey and the 7th District. She doesn't stop and she won't stop until the job is done.
Please visit www.KateforCongress.com and learn more about Kate and where she stands on the issues. Then judge for yourself if Kate will represent you well. I’m confident you will appreciate her experiences and professional accomplishments and see that she is qualified and ready to serve in Congress. I’m proud to have her as a daughter and I will be proud to have her as my Congresswoman.

Poor Taste
This is absolutely shameless. Using this venue as an endorsement instrament for one's daughter is a pathetic display of journaliasm, particularly for a former Governor. This web site should remove her as a columnist.
Are you or Kate paying PolitickerNJ for ...
... the free advertisement?
Also, how should this obvious contribution of significant value be reported on Kate's FEC forms? I'd imagine that a feature ad on this site running for the next few weeks would be fairly pricey.
Once again, the arrogance of privilege rears its ugly head. You've shamelessly abused the unique opportunity you have been given by PolitickerNJ to improve our state's political climate, opting instead to pervert your position in an underhanded attempt to promote your objectively unremarkable spawn. And drop the "she's more than just my daugther" crapola, Christie. Just the fact that Kate chooses to use the hereditary title "Whitman" belies her inherent qualifications for this high office. Her name is her sole credential.
I will be reporting this column to the FEC myself if I don't find it listed as a a contribution from either you or PolitickerNJ on Kate's next election report.
To the editors of this site -- if you have even an ounce of journalistic integrity left, you will IMMEDIATELY PULL THIS COLUMN AND HAND MS. WHITMAN HER WALKING PAPERS.
Give the lady a break.
She's proud of her daughter. So what?
If you don't like it, don't vote for her.
Mountaintop
Why are you using logic and understanding in a blog comment... we should be destroying this woman for loving and being proud of her daughter... shame on you for being reasonable.
And Martin... its ignorant people like you who judge a person simply on their name without knowing anything about them that forced the Governor to speak out. I'm not supporting Kate or anyone yet for that seat but I'm willing to hear her (and everybody) out before passing judgement. No wonder you took your name from Martine One
So What?
I agree. Christie has every right to feel proud of her daughter. So does the pipe fitter whose son gets a scholarship to law school and is the first "professional" in his family. I grew up around these proud blue collar types. They represent the best aspects of the American dream.
Royals such as the Whitmans suck the air out of the room, so to speak. They believe they are entitled to leap in front of the common slobs they hold in disdain and assume positions of power without paying their dues. That's what is so maddening about this whole episode.
As far as my comment about Kate being "unremarkable", I understand first hand that every child is truly remarkable in the eyes of their parents. If it appeared I was minimizing this reality, I would offer by way of explanation that Iwas referring to her credentials as a candidate being unremarkable, not her humanity.
As for sloburn, your prior posts betray you as a water carrier for Kate. You live by your words and die by them when exposed in the public light. BTW, sloburn, as far as judging people on their name goes, isn't this the nature of the beast, so to speak. Without the name there is no candidacy. So logically, all I can judge her on is her name. Wait a minute, isn't her name Annis now? Whatever ...
Great Post from Governor Whitman!
Although I am not in the 7th district, I commend Governor Whitman for using this fourm in praise of her daughter. Politicker NJ serves as a fourm to discuss relivant political events. This Primary will be the most interesting one in June. I believe that there are 99 reaons why Governor Whitman should write about the primary and the fact that her daughter is running is just one.
"Most people don’t know
"Most people don’t know that Kate worked for the U.S. Department of Labor specializing in the Employment and Training Agency after September 11th, 2001, helping displaced workers in New York City get back on their feet. True, they're all dead now, from lung cancer and emphysema, no doubt from their new jobs, because the air at Ground Zero was just fine. No, really.
BARF
So much for trying to shed the "I'm not my mother" image...
Christie
Being your daughter is enough. Barf!

Did you check to see if Bob Torricelli's blog endorsing Hillary was reported as a contribution?
Did you demand that Politicker NJ send Bob his walking papers?
Hypocrite!
GOPObserver
Dear Politics NJ:
Please give Bob Torricelli his walking papers for any one of a thousand excellent reasons.
Sincerely,
Martin Two
If you notice, the Torch didn't put a link to Hillary's web site on his blog. This bit of journalistic excess is not an analysis such as Torricelli presented, but an outright campaign pitch. Big difference. Is PolitickerNJ, in all fairness, going to allow other relatives the chance to endorse their candidates in a featured forum? If they do, I'll retract everything I've said as the playing field would be level.
Good Tactic or Not?
It is perfectly fine for any parent to write an oped in support of her daughter or son, regardless of what objective they may be trying to achieve. There is no need to get personal in response.
Now, since this is a political blog, I think it's perfectly fair to debate whether or not this is a good campaign tactic that benefits Candidate Kate. I would say it's not, but in the true spirit of the blogosphere, I would love to hear the other side of that coin.
Dead link to Kate's site
too funny
meanwhile, back at the ranch....
Truthfully, I've been impressed with what I've seen and heard from Kate. Saying " I'm more conservative than my mother" was a great move and it took guts...certainly not the actions of someone living off mommy's name.
Plus, I've heard from many different sources that she's hustling her butt off, working the county committee folks and meeting with anyone and everyone who could possibly be helpful.
She has a long way to go and she's still an underdog to Lance, but from afar it seems to me she's doing everything she should be doing to EARN the nomination.
Just my $.02
Pathetic
Christine Whitman ruined New Jersey and now she abuses this venue to promote her daughter.
Christie, you have absolutely no room to talk about ethics, so, don't bother writing about that subject ever again.
Why oh why didn't you just stay in DC and do for the EPA what you did for NJ - bring it to its knees financially.
If your daughter has any remote chance of winning her election, she needs to stay as far away from you as possible.
Pathetic!
The Landed Gentry
If your daughter is anything like you, we don't need her screwing up Washington the way you screwed up Trenton. Most of the fiscal mess in Trenton can be laid squarely at your feet. In a nice bit of irony, one of the only legislators who had the balls to vote against that stupid tunnel and pension funding plan way back when is probably going to wipe the floor with your daughter and end up as the GOP nominee for the 7th district: Leonard Lance.
This in-kind contribution/free advertising is an abomination and had better be disclosed to the FEC.

Christie's DEE DEE DEE Daughter
The comedian Carlos Mencia uses a certain phrase to describe people like Kate Whitman:
"DEE DEE DEE!"

Evaluate Kate for yourself
It's obvious many posters here have not even bothered to talk with Kate nor find out her opinions/positions on the issues confronting us.
I did, and I am glad I did so. Like many others, I thought Kate was just another child wanna be of a past politician.
In our conversation, I learned how ignorant I was to make such a comparison without bothering to give her the benefit of the doubt.
There are about 9 candidates, and I have spoken to six - the last 3 declaring (Sordillo, Gallic, and Hsing) haven't been seen yet. Without a doubt, Kate has them all beat in knowledge and positions on the issues. She can raise money, she has name recognition, and she has served on congressional staffs so she is familiar with the process. More importantly, she knows Washington DC is sick with Potomac Fever and wants to SERVE the 7th Congressional District people.
Do I agree with her on every single issue? No; but who agrees with who on every single issue?
Give her a chance, she will not let you down.
Ugh!
Christie Whitman started the borrowing schemes that Democrats have used to destroy this state. Of course Kate says she is more conservative than her RINO mother, there are Dem's more conservative than her mother!
And for Christie to use her column here to. . . well. . . I won't use the slang David Shuster used to describe Chelsea Clinton's campaign work. . . but for Christie Whitman to use her column here to promote her daughter is unsavory, in my humble opinion.
Honsetly, will the other candidates have their mommies write a column for us too? The smartest thing Katie can do is to tell her mother not to do any favors for her.

Wally, you are a gentleman and a scholar
I'm glad to see that good sportmanship is alive and well on PolitickerNJ! My faith in this site is redeemed.
Please Just Go Away !
Why don't you Whitmans just go away? Haven't you screwed things up enough in New Jersey? You are like the uninvited guests who showed up at the party and then peed in the punch bowl. We have had enough of your presence and would now just like you to leave. Don't go away mad. JUST GO AWAY !!!
Complainers
You complainers need to get a life. If this is your biggest problem, you live a charmed life. Why don't you work to find a better Presidential candidate?
Not a fan of the mom, but...
After reading up on Kate, her story checks out with this Republican. I was dead set against her when I first heard she was running(obvi, because of the name) but after hearing she was "not her mother", I chose to put my support behind her.
In kind contribution by PoliticsNJ.com
My name is Wally Edge and I approve this message.
Paid for Whitman for Congress.
How long will this post be up?
Christie, are you not going to put up a new post until June 4?
From a Republican
The only reason Kate is even considered a contender is because of Christie. She's trying to ride her name recognition until it backfires and then she will say she is very different from her mother. Ooops that already happened.
I love Christie but her daughter has some work to do, actually a lot of work to do. She hasn't had a real job in her lifetime. Working for her mothers PAC doesn't count. She needs some corporate and business experience behind her.
I will not be voting for her and urge others not to as well. We can't give up the seat in the district but we will if she is our nominee.
I will close by saying I really do appreciate Christie Whitman, but just not her daughter!
Fie on the Whitmans
Christie Whitman left this state a financial disaster, all to line the pockets of her rich Republican friends. Now she wants her kids to be entitled to public office ?
One could clearly see her arrogance at the hearings about her roll on 9/11. SAY NO TO THE WHITMAN'S !!!
NJ cannot afford another Whitman
Haven't we had enough of the Whitman's political royalty act.
