There was an interesting e-mail exchange between Republican State Chairman Tom Wilson and conservative strategist Rick Shaftan:

Subject: Share Your Property Tax Horror Stories
Dear Republicans,
It’s time to give the Democrats a reality check. Share with us your property tax horror stories.
Share your property tax “horror stories” and read more about the Republican Blueprint for Property Tax Reform, which would guarantee a permanent 30 percent property tax credit. You can share with Republican elected officials your story by going here.
The Democrats promised bold action six years in a row to lower property taxes but did just about everything imaginable to actually guarantee higher property taxes. When they finally agreed to our Republican’s call for a special session to deal with the property tax crisis, the outcome was nothing more than a warmed over rebate program that will not even undue the damage they did by freezing state aid each year.
So far we heard from middle class families who said they can no longer afford to live in New Jersey because of high property taxes and are planning to leave. We also heard from despairing senior citizens who said they have reached a point where they can’t pay their bills and keep up with rising property taxes.
Are you fed up with Corzine’s plan to sell the our state’s toll roads?
Selling New Jersey’s Turnpike, Parkway and Expressway from one state agency to another is just another budget gimmick that won’t solve the state’s long term budget and tax problems but will guarantee 50 years of annual toll increases.
Sign our petition and tell the Trenton politicians to stop selling our toll roads.
Please act immediately. We can’t solve the property tax mess and return common sense to state government without your help.
Shaftan's response:
Tom, my problem isn't the property tax. It's the income tax. You might be surprised to learn that most people who vote for your candidates pay more in state income tax than property tax and that's thanks to "Republicans" refusing to pass tax indexing in the eight years they had complete control of Trenton. Couple that with the sales tax and the property tax pales compared to those two for those of us "rich" taxpayers earning over $150K a year.
Your agenda sounds like something Codey and Corzine put together. I'm still waiting to hear which one of the McGreevey-Codey-Corzine 94 tax increases the state "Republicans" want to see repealed. Does the state GOP support the 7% sales tax? How about the $500 Small Business Tax? How about the 9% income tax bracket? What about the other 91 tax increases, many of which "Republicans" in the legislature supported.
You people are pathetic. You'll be lucky to hold the 48 seats you have now in this November's election -- a long way from the 85 "Republicans" held on the day Christie Whitman was elected.
A conspiracy theorist would say that you were really on the Democrats payroll, but that would be ridiculous. Why would the Democrats pay you when you are doing their bidding for free?
I was never a Chuck Haytaian fan, but at least this guy wanted to win instead of roll over in the hope that he would get invited to someone's Christmas Party, or whatever you people call your celebrations in December these days -- I think the term "Winter Festival" is the PC one people use.
Here's one more prediction -- if the Highway sale passes it will be because of the votes of defeated "Republican" legislators bought off in the Lame Duck session with the promise of a nice pension-boosting job in the final two years of the Corzine Administration.
But what do I know? I'm only a Republican and a Taxpayer, but I can't trace my lineage to the Mayflower so I don't count.

tom flippin wilson
tom wilson has to go... it's that simple
maybe true..
Yeah but come on shaftan couldn't have been more of a jerk about it.
Conservatives like him would rather split the party instead of unite. Because people like Shaftan could really win in New Jersey outside of the Mike Doherty districts.
Believe what you want to believe but at least be realistic about it.
What a Great Letter
Okay, he may have been a little rude in his letter, but let's be honest, that was pretty friggin' funny. I could only think of one other man that may write such a letter, and that is Mayor Steve Lonegan, AKA THE man.
In all seriousness, while the letter could have been written a bit more tastefully, he did hit some valid points (if you're a real conservative, that is.) It does get rather frustrating when so many Republicans in this state barely adhere to that of conservative. I don't think he is a Republican that wants to create rifts in the party; he is simply venting, something CONSERVATIVES may have to do from time to time if they live in New Jersey. Rick, I feel your pain.
Hey Dorothy
Let's just chase Tornados and call it even ok Rick?
Go start the Jon Ginty fan club...
oh come on. REAL CONSERVATIVES couldnt win in this state outside of the nothwest if they tried. Go ahead stick a REAL conservative in District 12 against Karcher and watch how much they get killed more than Beck might. Stick one in a district like the 14th that has more registered Democrats than Republicans. That'll solve the problem.
TAKE OUT ALL THE RINO's and fork over complete control of the freakin state to Democrats(as if they already dont have enough) and only run John Ginty in every single election, see how well that goes.
I'll be the one saying I told you so.
Backwardsjersey
You have drunk the Koolaide!!! You seem to think that you will find some success is getting some new gimmick to unite the party, but the answer is not in a new idea, it is going back to what worked without any manipulation. Just start being a Republican again and you will start winning.

It's not Tom Wilson's fault.
It's not Tom Wilson's fault. He's just a turd.
I blame the State Committee people who voted for Wilson, thus the useless 21 county chairs that hand picked the State Committee people.
Remember 1 male and female per county. Because that is nicer to say than 2 idiot moderates per county.
What a Jackass
What a load of shit. Nobody calls their parties "Winter Festivals". It's just more conservative bullshit intended to screen the true issues.
As for him paying more in income taxes than in property taxes, good. He can afford it. But the families making $65,000 and struggling to pay their mortgage while ponying up 10 percent of their GROSS pay in property taxes are the ones who really need help.
Stop with the bullcrap whining about PC this and PC that and let's remember that the United States is about helping all the people, not just the ones making more than enough to live and retire high on the hog.
Substance Over Form
The substance of Mr. Shaftan's letter is correct even if it isn't polite. We always hear from the Whitman wing of the party that they are for fiscal conservatism even if they disagree on the social issues. But the truth of the matter is that they really aren't very fiscally conservative either. They refuse to take a strong stand on the major spending issues of the day that require major reform for NJ to ever get its fiscal health back. And the reason is that they do not want to upset the special interests.
Reform public employee health and pension benefits more than at the margins? Heaven forbid. Reform the state's school-aid formula? Not much mention of that either. And some moderate Republicans even jump on the "consolidation" bandwagon which is largely a smokescreen which often offers little (if any) savings and is an excuse to reduce home rule.

"What a load of shit. Nobody calls their parties "Winter Festivals"".
Now now Mr. Brennan, there's no need for profanity.
Also, North Bergen does infact call their Christmas Party in the park a "Winter Festival". They put it up on a big red banner every year right underneath where it says; "Mayor Nicholas J. Sacco Presents" in big bold letters.
Finally, I think Rick does an excellent job in venting overall Republican frustration over the State party's gross incompitence. Kudos to you, Rick.

Republican Conscience
Remind me again how Ginty won. And while your at it what happened when you ran for office. You might want to draw a distinction between the Message and the Messenger but in your and Ginty's case, the voters seem to have rejected both.
Thank you, Qwerty - You made my point!
I lost the Republican Primary against the RINO machine that you are so enamored with. Additionally, Ginty lost in Republican Primary Races only, attempting to challenge the RINOs. If I or Ginty had won do you think we would have won the general election? Absolutely!!
These primary elections are for the soul of the Republican Party, and will not be over until you RINOs realize that principles are not up for negotiation. Keep doing the same think and expect different results. That is the RINO way.

Nice try but I know your style anywhere, Bill.

Don't Knock Consolidation
Lots of people say consolidation won't work - but it has not been tried yet. Opponents should at least admit that it should be attempted somewhere first, before saying it will fail. But in general, the GOP simply has no message. Tom Wilson and company merely look at what Democrats are doing and say that the GOP would do it slightly differently. People vote for the "Status Quo Party" because its the only one available.
The forgotten areas...
Shaftan is dead on. The GOP establishment has abandoned the Kearnys, Bloomfields, and Haddon Townships because they cannot connect to the conservative, working-class voters there who were solidly in the Reagan coalition. In 1980,Union City and West New York even, voted for Reagan. People in these towns are frustrated but they don't like being insulted. And the constant message, of "We're elite WASPs, we are better than you" that is subtly coded in state Republican we're as ethical-as-the-driven snow campaigns is killing the party. Signs of real change would be an immediate shot in the arm to the campaigns of Mike Guarino and Bob Colletti. Colletti especially can win, the BCDO is despised but well-funded. The 38th is also pretty conservative and theres lots of voters to reach out to.
Rick Shaftan says his
Rick Shaftan says his "problem isn't the property tax." I'm not sure even those of his ilk would agree with that sentiment. He also says his problem is with the income tax, and further mentions how that (along with the sales tax) are hurting those making over $150K a year.
Actually in NJ, a household making in the range of 150-200K is hardly rolling in it. Also, aside from Jon Shure, I can't think of too many New Jerseyans who believe that any of NJ's taxes or fees are too low or even about right.
However, with regards to income tax, the major difference between the income tax is that with the income tax a 150K wage-earner doesn't have a politically connected rent seeking tax assessor claim that his or her networth is really 500K and then have that person taxed accordingly. NJ's property tax system is archaic and belongs in the 19th century.
On the money.
The truth does hurt and that clocked Wilson right between the eyes. The fact there was no reponse only confirms the obvious, what could he say? The Republicans are a dysfunctional collection of blue bloods like Whitman, Kean and others mixed with RINO's who look down upon conservatives as White trash racists who can never win an election. The hard reality is that the NJ Republicans can't distingusih themselves from the Democrats who become more and more extreme in their leftist tendencies. The fact that people like Sweeney, Sarlo, Madden parade themselves as "centrists or moderates" is because the Republicans allow them too. They take political cover in GOP values and issues by buying off the opposition which gives the illusion these districts are no longer competitive when the reality remains they are risk. What elected Democrat other than Loretta Weinberg would even describe themselves as a liberal? New Jersey is hardly blue, but rather purple with a pure conservative streak on issues like crime, taxes and quality-of-life concerns. They attend religious services and don't see themselves as some extention of New York City liberalism.
What a sad bunch
I'm wondering how many of you folks who sit and trash others every get off your asses and actually get in the game? Ever occur to you that our friends on the other side of the aisle sit back laughing while we spend our time focusing on our differences instead of the the issues that connect us as Republicans? Folks, there are more of them than us and there are more independents than both of us put together. Social conservatives need fiscal conservatives and vice versa. How about putting aside the silly sniping and joining the coalition of those committed to winning some elections by rallying around the common ideas and themes that unite Republicans? Do you really think that any party chairman - national, state, county, or local - is omnipotent and can make things happen because he or she has a title? I dont' know Wilson, but it seems to me that all of you who seem to get off kicking him around are either engaged in trying to settle some personal score or are the sort who'd rather complain than do. Who here is out helpling elect a candidate they believe in? How many doors have you knocked on this summer Dino? How many new voters did you register Pulaski? Conscience, have you made any phone calls to help ID or pursuade any voters this year? Surely, there must be SOME candidate you guys can support who is in a race that is competitive???? Y'all ought to remember Reagan's 11th commandment.
Wilson is a failure
And the party rewarded him with another term, that's why the Democrats are laughing! The Republicans will probably lose additional seats in a cycle they should increase there numbers. Republicans are not losing because of primaries and in-fighting, there losing because the people in charge are bunch of fools.
sad bunch
GOPanimal, Succinctly put, RIGHT ON. Anyone wishing to put their literary talents to good use, we could use some well written "letters to the editor" on those subjects about which you are so darned passionate. Save the Republican backstabbing for next years primary. The pen is mightier than..
Never mind just get up and do something. Republicans need your support
