Hutchison wasn't motivated to run against Madden

Daniel Hutchison, a Gloucester Township Councilman and a Republican, said he didn’t run for state Senate this year in district 4 because he thinks State Sen. Fred Madden, a Democrat, is basically a good candidate.

"I respect him more than I respect any other State Senator," said Hutchison in a telephone interview Wednesday. "He is a genuinely decent human being, who stands up for what he believes. He voted for (Gov. Jon) Corzine’s budget. On that point he and I disagree, but we agree on a lot."

The attorney and GOP nominee in 2004 to face U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews in the 1st Congressional District stopped just short of endorsing Madden.

"I know the other gentleman," he said of Republican State Senate nominee John Jankowski. "He’s a nice fella. If he’s going to pour his heart and soul into running against Fred, God bless him."

Beaten by 50 percentage points in his Congressional bid, Hutchison didn’t blame his party for failing to recruit him, and took his reasons for not running beyond showing respect for Madden.

"To be honest, I question whether I’d be a good Senate candidate," said Hutchison. "These people I’ve criticized in the past, I’ve come to respect now that I’m an elected official. I don’t want to start throwing darts at the Republican side. I did have conversations with them. I thought long and hard about it and decided the investment I wanted to make was to my wife and family."

How True

But I don't think the Democrats want him. If they did, why would they drag Sandy Love up from Florida to run for Assembly?

He had conversations? Senator Leonard Lance spoke and praised his candidacy at the Lincoln Day Dinner. It was a well known we was lining up support and funding and now turns arround and praises 3 public income Sen. Madden. Sen. Madden has nearly as many sources of public income as Wayne Bryant had, but at least he shows up. Dan didn't.

Dan Who?

Leonard Lance praise - What a Joke - another Republican who is always safe and useless while coming from the “Not in my Backyard Highlands region.

Next to Flip

There is no surprise here. He will just be the next Republican that is swept up in the South Jersey Democratic Machine - Elected Officials for Sale. Sure, Fred Madden is a nice guy, no one in the 4th disputes that. But he is a Norcross Senator. [Norcross SJ Senators: Bryant, Adler, Sweeney, Bodine(next), and of course Madden]. Hutchison should have used the "Mayer Excuse", "I need to spend more time with my family". The voters would have accepted that. But to support the current Senator? What's next? I guess, GOP Councilman Hutchison will join former Winslow GOP Mayor SueAnn Metzner, and former GOP Assemblyman Fran Bodine (Burlington County). But why? Just follow the $$$$ and jobs.

Honestly, I think Hutchison is far les cunning than all that. The Dems would take him. He was a democrat for one hot second, if I recall. Wasn't he supposed to run for Assembly and then changed his mind? I think he just doesn’t have the belly for a fight— as a Democrat or Republican. He’d rather just be liked by people than cheese anyone off standing on principal for anything.
