Governor-elect Corzine's Statement on Congressman Bob Menendez
"In making this decision I was blessed to have several qualified individuals to choose from. The voters have given me the responsibility to make tough decisions - I have made a decision that I believe is the right one.
The symbolism of the American promise meets reality in the person, career and service of Congressman Menendez. He's a fierce and articulate advocate for New Jersey's needs and is committed to a progressive and responsible view of the role of government in our society. He has the courage and conviction to stand up for what is right. He left the corrupt administration of a man he had once called his mentor and testified against him in federal court. When his life was threatened for taking a stand, he put on a bulletproof vest and continued his fight.
Congressman Menendez's record as a legislator shows that he has delivered on the issues that matter to New Jerseyans. I know that he will fight for the same things I fought for in the Senate: quality education, homeland security; equal opportunity; a cleaner environment; and standing up to the Bush Administration on the War in Iraq.
He has proven that a humble beginning doesn't have to be a barrier to success. His life is a testament to the power of the American Dream and the promise that if we create opportunity for those willing to work hard, anything is possible."
