Giuliani leads in N.J.

A New Jersey poll released today by Quinnipiac University shows Sen. Hillary Clinton gaining on former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in a head-to-head match-up for the presidency.

Giuliani leads Clinton 47%-44% mong New Jersey voters, a margin narrowed since April when Quinnipiac had Giuliani leading against Clinton, 49% to 40%.

But in three-way race with New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg chewing into Giulaini’s lead and giving an even 36% to Giuliani and Clinton while earning 18% of the vote himself.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton is growing stronger in New Jersey, and now trails former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani by just 3% in a head to head match-up, compared with nine points in the last poll. And if Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs as an independent, he takes more votes from Giuliani, making the three-way race too close to call," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Giuliani and Clinton remain the frontrunners in New Jersey in their respective parties, according to the poll. Among New Jersey Democratic voters, Clinton earns 37%, former Vice President Al Gore (who has not announced he is a candidate) receives 18%, Sen. Barack Obama receives 15%, and former Sen. John Edwards receives 6%. Among New Jersey Republican voters, Giulaini gets 46%, Sen. John McCain receives 11%, former Sen. Fred Thompson (who has not announced he is a candidate) gets 9% and former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney gets 7%.

President George W. Bush continues his freefall, as his disapproval/approval ratings in the state stand at 74% to 21%, according to Quinnipiac.

“President Bush’s approval rating has hit an all time low of just 21% - lower than we've ever measured for a President in any state or national poll,” Richards said.

Why are these polls news?

Based on our Governor, our Assembly and our State Senate, one can only conclude that either NJ Voters are ignorant or DGAS.

Either way how can polls mean anything?

Bush; Statewide Politicos vs Grassroots Activists?

First, who the heck are the 21% New Jerseyans who still think that the president is doing a good job, and where have they been the past 6 years? Bush's national average is also now in the upper 20%s, making his disapproval rating close to the highest on record.

Regarding the impressive Clinton/Giuliani numbers, I am disppointed the Edwards' numbers haven't grown, even though he has won the past five Blue Jersey polls for presidential preference; activists on the ground -- whether it is Edwards (6%) and Obama (15%) on the Dem side, or Paul (1%) on the Republican side -- aren't making much of a dent in the statewide polling for their respective candidates. It seems that the statewide party establishment has a different preference for presidential candidates than grassroots activists.

Finally, I don’t like the advantage that Giuliani will get, that is, the entire Republican statewide delegates, if he is the winner in N.J.; talk about a built-in advantage.

NY pols

Not surprised that Bloomberg wouldn't have a shot in NJ if its Giuliani v. Clinton. But I wonder, if its 2 non-New Yorkers for the GOP and Dems (Obama v. Romney?), would Bloomberg have a chance to carry NJ. I say yes.

Polls at this point are ...

meaningless. It's summertime. Kids just got out of school. People are going on vacation. NJ voters will not seriously focus on the election until well into the Fall. Plus, on the GOP side Fred is looming yet not yet announced. On the Dem side, Gore hasn't ruled things out yet and, if he decides to jump in, would definitively change the electoral balance of power.

That said, the work done during this calm before the storm is critical. This is the time to sow. Later comes the time to reap. Anyone who lets themselves get disheartened this early in the game is destined for failure.

Dear RepCon - No Deal

Sorry, can't trade with you - I have enough Balls and, I might add, they are nice and big. (Hope you're paying attention Salma) You, on the other hand, have a tad too much straw mixed in with your Brains for me to be trading with you.

Scarecrow: I haven't got a brain... only straw.

Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Democrat bloggers vs. ordinary taxpayers

MartinOne, you asked:

Who the heck are the 21% New Jerseyans who still think that the president is doing a good job, and where have they been the past 6 years?

Well, maybe they are people (from all class spectra, not just the rich) who have been enjoying, in the face of ever-rising property taxes and even sales taxes in New Jersey over the past 6 years, the tax relief afforded by the federal income tax cuts championed by Bush.

King George the Great

Oh, right, that's why they still like him. Forget about warrantless wiretapping, a war based upon fiction and profiteering, blatant disregard for individual liberties (funny how the Republicans love to talk about small government and less intervention into private lives, but when push comes to shove they are total hypocrites...a wire in every telepone and a camera in every bedroom ought to be their motto), and flouting the Constitution whenever possible. Yeah, "The Decider" has been doing a hecukva job.
