Corzine to propose sweeping campaign finance reforms

Gov. Jon Corzine will announce a highly aggressive anti-wheeling campaign finance reform package that will reduce contribution limits to county and local party organizations and legislative leadership committees. The Governor has scheduled a 2:30 PM news conference.

Driving to the parking lot of the dentist and not going in doesn't do much to make a tooth ache go away. This is now way stops the practice of wheeling. It will add aditional PACs and committees, that's all. This will make the wheel bigger and even more difficult to trace for the average local tax payer who has no idea how bad he is being screwed by Joe Ferriero and the like.

To put a real limit on PTP, the candidate needs to be limited on how much they can accept no matter where it comes from. What does a candidate get out of running for an unpaid office (in many small towns)that requires $30 to $75,000 in campaign contributions?? Do the simple math. SOmeone has to get paid back.

Base the amounts either on population or a percentage of tax base. You run for Mayor of a town, you can receive $.10 for every $1000 in tax base or something like that.

State CMTE still not restricted

Notice how the State CMTE's are not restricted in the proposal. Corzine controls the Dem St. CMTE.
Hypicritical as usual.

Corzine = D!psh!t

This is the same idiot that sent $37,000 to Ferriero and then his mommy miraculously wrote a $37,000 check to the corrupt scumbag too. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh campagin finance reform. Idiot. How about he does something meaningful, like get a law in place to stop legislators from using their jobs to enrich their employers?

True Reform

The goal of any "reform" should be simple: prevent those who wish to use political power for personal profit from doing so. An anti-war kook who wants to donate $5 million to John Adler should be allowed to do so. A public employee who wishes to use political power to increase his take at taxpayer expense should not.

So. Forget donation limits entirely; just ensure that they come from people with no corrupt motive. Absolutely prohibit public employees from any political participation or donations, and include their unions, too. Let anyone else donate what they want, but every nickel gets reported. After all, if Corzine can buy an office for himself, what's wrong with letting him buy one for other folks? As long as the electorate knows who the purchasers are, they can vote intelligently. And they'll get the kind of government they deserve.

This is un-American

Not surprising from our millionaire Communist Governor who proposed this plan to stop everyone but millionaires from running for office.

If Corzine so believes in this crap, then next year if he runs (which is questionable) he should limit himself to the same caps he's putting on everyone else. If he really believes in this "good government" nonsense then he should participate in the public financing system he supports for all elections.

Simple Reforms

The simplest thing to do would be to eliminate any contributions from entities to campaigns. If only individuals make contributions, it is very simple to see who is really giving to whom without phony shells hiding the fact. And it would prevent bosses creating funds to dole out cash to machine hacks. Federal campaigns already prohibit corporate contributions to campaigns.

Also, require very quick disclosure of each contribution on the internet, say a week tops, so it is all out in the open.

And restrict employees or owners of governement contractors from making contributions. Do one or the other but not both.

Do the above reforms and I could even see loosening or eliminating the caps, so that the non-wealthy would have a chance to run against the likes of Jon Corzine.

Do as I say.....

Corzine is one to talk. When “Daddy GoldmanBux” Corzine ran for Governor, tens of millions of his money made it all the way down to the smallest hamlet, burgh, and borough. Now that he is the King of NJ he wants to lock the door behind him.

I appreciate Patrick’s comments about eliminating union PAC money from state elections but, that wouldn’t be fair. The Democrats would be out of business, if it wasn’t for the NJEA and CWA et al. Corzine kept busy “negotiating” with Karla Katz while Ferriero, Codey, & Lesniak put the entire state up for sale.

Its Wall Street not West State Street, stupid!

Seriously, folks. According to everyone out there the economy is on the brink of collapse. Jerseyans are drowning in bad debt and the ever rising cost of living here and the Wall Street Wiz Kid gives us with phony ethics - Phethics -reform? Nice distraction but it won't save one family from foreclosure. Should have come out today with a state level economic stimulus package that could have included suspension or rollback of some of the several dozen taxes and fees hiked in the past decade.
