CORODEMUS AND KEAN CAUGHT LYING TO SENIORSEATONTOWN
-Assemblymen Steve Corodemus and Sean Kean will say and do anything to get reelected this November.Their latest campaign mailer states in bold white letters "Corodemus & Kean are opposed to President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security." The other side of the mailer says "You can trust Assemblymen Steve Corodemus & Sean Kean to stand up for your retirement security. Their record proves it." [Source: Corodemus and Kean '05 mail piece] That would be great... if it wasn't a complete lie.
"It's simply amazing to me that after all of our debates on ethics and all of our opponents' ham-handed attempts at taking the 'high road' that they would so quickly and so obviously lie to the public," said 11th District Democratic Assembly candidate Jim Reilly. "It's simply disgraceful. Assemblymen Corodemus and Kean will say and do anything to protect their incumbency. If we can't trust them to be honest about their voting records, how can we expect them to be honest about ethics reform or their property tax schemes?"
A quick look at their record proves one thing: Assemblymen Corodemus and Kean opposed a vote in the General Assembly that called on Congress to reject schemes to privatize Social Security. The resolution, AR-245, (2004-2005 session) memorializes Congress to reject the Social Security privatization proposals of the President's Social Security Commission and would exacerbate, rather than cure, the problems that Social Security currently faces. The resolution was passed by the General Assembly on March 14, 2005 by a vote of 47-17-13. Assemblyman Corodemus abstained from voting on the measure and Assemblyman Kean actually voted against it. Perhaps the Assemblymen chose to lie about their records because, at the time of their votes against protecting Social Security, New Jersey was, and continues to be, home to over 1,363,814 Social Security recipients, including 140,693 disabled workers and over 100,000 children.
"Assemblymen Corodemus and Kean were caught red handed lying to seniors to try and get their votes," said 11th District Democratic Assembly candidate Matt Doherty. "With three weeks left to the election, our opponents have shown their true colors. Jim and I stand for open and honest government. Our opponents stand for lying to the public and protecting their Assembly seats at any cost. However, their mailer did have one grain of truth. It said that "You need state legislators you can trust. You need state legislators who will fight for you." They're right, and on Election Day, Jim Reilly and I will be those legislators."
