If you’re a betting person, you probably can’t resist speculating about who will really be the Democrat challenger in the 1st Congressional District this fall.
After all, Rob Andrews indicated he would not seek to reclaim his seat if his last minute US Senate primary bid was unsuccessful. And his wife, Camille, was reportedly only running as a temporary placeholder on the ballot until party leaders had time to select a replacement nominee.
A look now at the second day local press coverage may cause some to change the odds on Rob’s short-term non-political future.
Asked whether he would seek elected office in the future on election night, Andrews told the Gloucester County Times: "I would never rule anything out."
In his other hometown paper, Andrews’ wanna-be successors have all but set the stage for his return. In the Courier Post, there was this commentary: “Noting that in his unsuccessful bid for the Senate seat Andrews still carried the 1st District by a wide margin, (Assemblyman John) Burzichelli said he had little doubt that voters there would return Andrews to another term.”
A more strident endorsement came from his one-time mentor Speaker Joe Roberts who had this to say: "I would urge him to reconsider...For us to lose the ability to build on his two decades of service would be an awful loss."
And lest we forget…these same newspapers once inked their pages with the names of would-be Andrews’ replacements on the mere speculation the Congressman might run to replace Jim McGreevey after the former governor announced his plans to resign.
The absence of circling political sharks reported by the local press may speak volumes about Andrews’ future.

Andrews Future?
He has one?
Seriously, Rob shouldn't have let Corzine trick him into supporting the bogus toll road scheme. Afterwards Lautenberg came out against it. By that time, it was too late. Rob then defended it further. This caused him to lose a lot of street cred.
Boy, it's a good thing that toll scheme didn't go through. There are already less drivers on the toll roads and the parkway will be raising rates to compensate for it. This will just add more fuel to the fire. (sorry for the pun). With the stock & bond market, this would have been a disasterous move. Corzine should thank his stars and all those who fought this plan. It actually protected him a little.
PS. Has anyone noticed that when typing a response, after a minute or two the screen refreshes and all is lost?
Andrews should
do the following:
chill
write a book
start campaigning NOW for whatever he wants to pursue in the future and start lining up chits
He shouldn't sit around licking his wounds and vowing retribution, that will just eat him up. Move on! Life's too short.
Andrews
Will be back in the house
Andrews
Andrews, perhaps one of the most talented politicians in a state without many such politicos, should run for higher office in the next few years. By every account, he is not returning to his house seat, so...
Three options:
1). Corzine should make him Lieutenant Governor. This is a perfect position for him.
2). He should run again against Pallone/Rothman/et al for Lautenberg's senate seat when the latter retires in 2014. If this happened, he would need to do something productive, and something that kept him in the public eye, until then.
3). He should succeed Corzine for governor in 2013.
