GOP Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck has decided to run for State Senate against Democratic incumbent Ellen Karcher, setting up one of the premier legislative contests of the 2007 mid-term elections. Beck will give up the Assembly seat she won in 2005 to challenge Karcher, who upset Co-Senate President John Bennett in 2003.
Update: Beck says that the announcement of her Senate candidacy is premature. ""I have not yet made a decision or any type of announcement regarding which seat I will be running for in 2007," she told PoliticsNJ.com. But Senate Republicans say she is running against Karcher.

Besides that Beck is hot and Karcher looks like a dog, what differences are there between the candidates? Will Jen's good looks turn out rightwingers disaffected by Jon "Karl Marx" Corzine? Between her and Sean Kean, this is a sure sign Monmouth will totally flip Democratic this year.

No doubt Senator karcher's wacky side will come out. Her paranoid delusions ("the mobsters tried to kill me," or, my personal favorite, "they killed all the fish in the memorial Koy pond we built in the backyard in memory of my father") will unquestionably become standard fare for Karcher.

just run the tape of Karcher's Senate victory speech when she turned her head around Linda Blair style and gave a death glare to her horribly ill-behaved son behind her then rotated back to the cameras and crowd all smiles. That should show voters what forces were behind her win four years ago. I think the dead fish in the koi pond also have some antichrist implications to it.

This is apparently the level of discourse we can expect from the Republicans this year. Maybe they're a little nervous about running a lobbyist against a reformer?

Beck can bring back some respectability to a district plagued by scandals in the past few Senate elections. A no brainer really.

Karcher is the leading voice for reform in the Legislature. Beck is a former lobbyist, though she tries to hide that side of her past by supporting reforms.
This race will be decided by the Asbury Park Press. They loved Karcher in '03, hated Bob Morgan in '05 (leading to Beck's win).
When those editors make it personal, its all over.

There is nothing wrong with being a lobbyist. Most are hard working and honest. The few bad apples should be punished under the law, but to claim that one person is not fit for office because he or she is or was a lobbyist is ridiculous. The same could be said about attorneys, government employees, pharmacists and so on...

Another angle not mentioned yet is $$$. Karcher is a favorite of Codey and Corzine. I could see her campaign costing the Dems close $2.5-3 million.
Beck will have to make do with much, much less. This will be the State GOP's prime target. But she still figures to be at a 3:1 cash disadvantage at best.

YNOT--what do you think she should run for instead? She's already in the Assembly seat...and depending on where she lives in Red Bank, she's either in Pallone's or Holt's House district. It's a stretch for many reasons to think that she'd beat either of them.
What else do you have in mind?

Also, I think the comments made about Senator Karcher are terrible, whatever party someone belongs to. These type of remarks don't belong on this forum. I am very disappointed in some of the people here making these type of remarks. A woman's looks should have nothing to do with the issues here.

You guys are INSANE. Karcher is the one thats HOT. Beck looks like an old school marm. Karcher has more gravitas as well.
I agree that this is one race to watch. Perhaps we can get Wally to do a poll about which legislator is hotter. Anyone for Amy Handlin or Pam Lampitt?

I agree that allot the the chatter about Beck and Karcher's appearance is regretable and unnecessary.
This will be the premier legislative race in 2007.
Karcher's credentials as a reformer are rock solid. She wore a wire for the FBI. Nobody can top that.
I think Beck's lobbying carreer will hurt her. Lobbying against stricter DWI laws, Bid tampering. these are going to be liabilities for her.
As far as the money, Karcher will have much greater resources, but remember, Beck was widely outspent in the 2005 Assembly race and was still the top vote getter.
This race is a tossup and will be the race to watch in 07.

Either woman's level of hotness ought not be a factor in this potential campaign. Karcher voted for the sales tax increase and there is nothing sexy about that. In fact it is downright ugly and she ought to be wearing a bag over her head.

I guess when you can't win on the nuts and bolts issues all you have left is to trot out your belief that your candidate is "hot" looking.
What is that supposed to mean? Is the candidate going to date anyone who supports her with their vote or with campaign contributions?
I can see the ad now...."Vote For ME: I'm HOT!"
