ROBERTS: BUDGET COMMITTEE TO MEET WEDNESDAY
Speaker Introduces Sales Tax Bill to Be Used Strictly for Property Tax Relief
(TRENTON) - Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr. today announced that the Assembly Budget Committee will meet Wednesday for purposes of releasing a budget bill that does not include a sales tax increase from 6 percent to 7 percent.
Roberts (D-Camden) made the following statement:
"We are determined to meet the constitutionally mandated June 30 deadline for enacting a balanced budget.
"A budget bill that does not require a sales tax increase will be presented for the Budget Committee's consideration on Wednesday so that we will be in a position to meet our constitutional deadline.
"I also have introduced legislation to increase the sales tax to ensure that any such increase is used specifically for purposes of providing property tax reform.
"I will not post this bill - or any other bill to increase the sales tax one penny - for purposes of balancing the state budget."
