SIRES RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE HUNGARIAN UPRISING ADVANCES

(TRENTON) - A resolution Assembly Speaker Emeritus Albio Sires sponsored to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising was approved today by an Assembly committee.

"There is nothing more noble, more brave or more dangerous than fighting for freedom," said Sires (D-Hudson). "This was the inspiration behind the American Revolution and it was the inspiration for Hungarians who launched their uprising against the Soviets 50 years ago. The forced flight of over 47,000 expatriates to our country, their sacrifices, and their contributions to our culture over the past half century should be remembered and honored."

The resolution (AR-142) commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising and requests the Governor to issue a proclamation calling on local officials and residents to observe the week of October 23 with appropriate activities and programs.

On October 23, 1956, approximately 100,000 Hungarian citizens protested their country's communist government and its domination by the Soviet Union. The Hungarian Security Police dispatched to the scene opened fire on the protesters, killing hundreds. As a result, the Hungarian government called for the withdrawal of all Soviet troops from Hungary, announced Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact, and requested United Nations' assistance in establishing Hungarian neutrality.

The resolution was unanimously released from the Assembly State Government Committee. It now heads to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post the bill for a floor vote.
